ORLANDO, FL (October 14, 2009) – With a common goal to improve the health and safety of central Florida’s workers, by involving ergonomic concepts and programs, the American Society of Safety Engineers’ (ASSE) Central Florida Chapter and the Tampa Area Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will sign an alliance on November 4, 2009 at their one-day Central Florida Ergonomics Professional Development Conference (PDC) to be held at the Orlando Repertory Theatre in Orlando, FL.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), also referred to as ergonomic injuries, which are injuries or illnesses affecting the connective tissues of the body such as muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, or spinal discs, accounted for 29 percent of all workplace injuries requiring time away from work in 2007. In addition, BLS noted that there were 335,390 MSDs in 2007 requiring a median of nine days away from work, two days more than the medial for all days away from work cases.
According to the ASSE Central Florida Chapter, the alliance was formed to improve the health and safety of central Florida's workers by going above and beyond the OSHA general industry regulations and involving ergonomic concepts and programs. This is the first year the Central Florida chapter and the Tampa Area OSHA office will sign an alliance.
“While we are discussing future joint activities and initiatives with the Tampa Area OSHA office, we are confident that the success of our ergonomics alliance will create opportunities to find common concerns and common goals to work on together,” said Kelly Bernish, ASSE Central Florida Chapter delegate who helped negotiate the alliance with the local OSHA office.
The November 4, 2009 Central Florida Chapter Ergonomics PDC is co-sponsored by ASSE’s Ergonomics Branch, part of the ASSE Industrial Hygiene Practice Specialty, along with the American Association of Occupational Health Nurses’ (AAOHN) Florida Section, ASSE’s Women in Safety Engineering (WISE) Common Interest Group, the Alliance for Central Florida Safety (ACFS), Risk and Insurance Management Society (RIMS), the Florida Municipal Association for Safety and Health (FMASH), and the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) Florida Section.
